Take the Caregiver Burnout Quiz

Rate each question by how true it is: seldom, sometimes, often, or usually.

  • I find I can't get enough rest.
  • I don't have enough time for myself.
  • I don't have time to be with other family members besides the person I care for.
  • I feel guilty about my situation.
  • I don't get out much anymore.
  • I have conflicts with other family members.
  • I cry every day.
  • I worry about having enough money to make ends meet.
  • I don't feel I have enough knowledge or experience to give care as well as I'd like.
  • My own health is not good.

If your response to one or more of these areas is usually true or often true, it may be time to begin looking for help with caring for your loved one and help in taking care of yourself.

Why VISITING ANGELS is America's Choice in Homecare

  • We believe there's no place like home . . . and, we want to help you stay there.

  • We encourage you to participate in the selection of your own caregiver . . . because this is not just our job - it's the beginning of an important relationship.

  • We only recruit experienced caregivers . . . because you deserve someone who "knows what they're doing" and has demonstrated that they have chosen this work because they love it.

  • We believe that character and integrity count in caregivers . . . because we know you want an honest, reliable caregiver that you can trust.

  • We respect your lifestyle and recognize that you deserve the right to be in charge . . . and we promise never to forget that we are guests in your home.

  • We make quality home care affordable . . . because you deserve quality and value for your money.

  • We are proactive to meet your needs . . . because anticipating and preventing problems is better than waiting for them to happen.

  • And, we've "been there," so we understand . . . because we have had to make the same decisions as you are facing.

"Where Do We Start?"

 How Do We Initiate Services?

At Visiting Angels, we pride ourselves in our thorough intake process and attention to detail. Although we are capable of initiating services on a same-day basis, we prefer not to, because focusing our attention on truly understanding your need and preferences is essential to the art of selecting the best caregiver match for you. Typically, we appreciate having 2-3 days to accomplish the following steps:

  1. We listen to you as long as it takes to make sure we understand your problem.
  2. We provide whatever information you need to make a confident decision about how and when to move forward.
  3. When you are ready, we will schedule a convenient time to meet with you and your loved one in their home, or even in the hospital, to discuss their care needs and concerns, gather some background information, and begin to establish a trusting relationship together.
  4. Once you decide to move ahead, our staff meets to discuss your loved one's particular needs, taking into account his or her personality, interests, hobbies, etc., so we can make the best caregiver match.
  5. We schedule a time to introduce our caregiver choice to you and your loved one. We think it's important that you have the opportunity to talk with him or her, ask questions, and begin to get acquainted. This is a crucial step in making sure that things get off on the "right foot."
  6. Service starts only after you and your loved one are perfectly satisfied with the caregiver match we have made for you. Our goal is to eliminate the stress most people feel about who will be providing care for their loved one and give them the confidence that they have made the best choices.

The Long Term Care Question

The most common LTC promise made by an adult child to an aging parent is:

"I'll never put you in a nursing home."

But too few people who make that promise ever ask themselves the key LTC question:

"How will I keep that promise?"

This information may help you answer that question.

The Cost of Not Having a Long Term Care Plan

Read this 6/14/2009 Minneapolis Star/Tribune article  for some straight talk about the possible consequences of not planning:  "Long-term care could break you."
